Regole del forum

La non osservanza delle regole porta a provvedimenti di vari tipo da parte dello staff, in particolare la non osservanza della regola 5 porta alla cancellazione del post e alla segnalazione dell'utente. In caso di recidività l'utente rischia il ban temporaneo.

Mi rendo conto che il mio problema non è certo di quelli che possano essere diagnosticati in quattro e quattr'otto, ma ci provo lo stesso.
Il mio fido portatile, un Acer TravelMate 291 LMi, il maggio prossimo compie quattro anni, un bel traguardo, considerando lo stress a cui -poverino!- l'ho sempre sottoposto.
Della dotazione hardware originaria è rimasto ben poco, ho sostituito il disco, la RAM, la batteria, persino il cavetto dell'alimentazione ma non mi ha mai dato il minimo problema.
Una settimana fa torno dalle vacanze, lo accendo e - boom!- in fase di boot va in kernel panic.
Lì per lì, dato che avrei potuto lasciarlo in sospensione, non ci faccio caso, lo riavvio un paio di volte e tutto torna come prima.
Mi dimentico dell'inconveniente, ma oggi pomeriggio, poco dopo aver ultimato di ricompilare qualche pacchetto per il nostro repository, stesso problema: nel momento in cui cerco di rimuovere, da shell, una directory, eccolo freezarsi.
Riavvio, rifaccio la stessa operazione, nuovo freeze.
Visto che sulla macchina tengo due kernel - quello di default della 12.2 ed un 2.6.25.1 ricompilato più volte, penso sia un problema dovuto al kernel più vecchio: riavvio col 2.6.27.7 ma il problema si riverifica.
Allora, il kernel 2.6.27.7 è lo huge-smp di default di Pat, assolutamente vergine, il 2.6.25.1 -lo scrivevo più sopra- l'ho più volte ricompilato ma è sempre andato alla grande, soprattutto sulla 12.1 dove l'ho utilizzato per più di sei mesi.
L'unica cosa strana che ho notato (non da ora, comunque) è che, tutte le volte che sposto il portatile, lo schermo diventa all'improvviso grigio e torna a funzionare solo dopo che il laptop è stato adagiato su un tavolo, senza essere più sottoposto a nessun tipo di scossone.
Avete idea di cosa stia succedendo?

Beh... A giudicare dal comportamento in movimento devi avere qualcosa di rotto dentro!!! Qualche cavetto che te li fa impazzire...

Bhe prova con una distribuzione live su cdrom e vedi se ti crasha ancora.. io avevo avuto lo stesso problema e ho risolto cambiando un modulo ram difettoso

Visto che lo hai gia` aperto, fuori garanzia.

Consiglio di un vecchio elettronico:

prima cosa spolverarlo al 100%,
aria compressa da bombola o compressore,

stacca e rimetti _tre_ volte ogni spina,
ogni scheda, _ogni_ contatto movibile.
Tre volte perche':
- alla prima muovi i sedimenti
- alla seconda pulisci un pochino i contatti
- alla terza li pulisci in modo usabile

Se hai uno spray per elettronica decente,
non sprayare, ma con un pulisci orecchie
impregnato li pulisci contatto per contatto,
poi come detto sopra, _tre_ _volte_.

Sapessi quanti errori ho risolto in questo modo,
anche nei miei computer!

Ringrazio tutti, in particolar modo Mario, per l'aiuto prestatomi, ma ad ora la situazione non è cambiata.
Ho provato a pulire le aree dello chassis a cui è notoriamente più semplice accedere, cioè RAM e disco.
Lì per lì tutto bene, ho utilizzato il portatile per 3-4 ore, poi all'improvviso, durante una banale sessione di KDE, il freeze.
Nessuna traccia apparente di malfunzionamento né nei log di sistema né in quelli del server grafico (uso i driver proprietari ATI).
L'unica cosa strana, diciamo così (la corruzione del file system al riavvio penso sia normale), è che, quando si verifica il freeze, i tasti Scroll Lock e Bloc Maiusc iniziano a lampeggiare.
La RAM l'ho sostituita tutto sommato poco tempo fa, due anni, mai un problema.
Altri suggerimenti?

i tasti Scroll Lock e Bloc Maiusc lampeggiano sempre quando il kernel va in panic.. mi permetto di insistere.. hai provato una live?

Onestamente no (è un periodo in cui non ho tempo nemmeno di grattarmi i pochi capelli che ho in testa).

EDIT: sto scaricando Slax.
Vedrò, una volta caricata la live, quello che succede.
Il problema è che il fattaccio può verificarsi anche 4-5 ore dopo l'accensione del portatile.

Io ho avuto un problema simile a causa di un hard disk che era stanco di vivere, vedi se può essere il tuo caso (SMART). BTW questo potrebbe anche spiegare l'assenza di problemi nei log.

Penso abbia ragione tu, Luca: ho provato ad utilizzare alternativamente uno dei due moduli di RAM ed il problema si è ripresentato.
Ora come ora non riesco nemmeno ad avviare Windows che si trova, logicamente, in una sua partizione.
Valuterò se mi conviene, vista la vetustà del portatile, prenderne uno nuovo o limitarmi ad acquistare l'hdd.

forse lo hai già fatto / ci hai già pensato: il buon vecchio badblocks.

da cd di installazione di slackware - o da una live che va interamente in ram (damn small?)

# badblocks -sv /dev/hda

(o analogo device)
