Rilevamento dispositivi sdaX corretto?

Quando attacco il mio disco rigido esterno ecco cosa ottengo digitando tail -F /var/log/messages

non dovrebbe comparire il nome delle due partizioni presenti sul disco, sda1 e sda2? I dispositivi vengono creati correttamente in /dev solo che qui non si vedono. Stesso risultato per le tre penne usb che ho provato. Preciso che per ora non ho nessun problema, funziona tutto, solo ci ho fatto caso perché stavo pianificando di attivare l'automount e volevo esser certo che tutto funzionasse. Prima non l'ho notato anche perché passando a Slackware 11 dalla 10.2 già sapevo quante partizioni avevo sul disco e non mi sono preoccupato di controllare.
Non vorrei sbagliarmi ma credo di aver letto su decine di topic diversi messaggi del tipo:"vedi con tail come ti riconosce la penna...sda1 o ....ecc...".
