dovresti cercare nella documentazione sul web se per quella scheda esistono delle impostazioni particolari, sembra un problema di riconoscimento delle frequenze del monitor

Una nota che forse può essere utile: ho avuto lo stesso problema con ubuntu 9.10, Fedora 12 e PC-BDS 8.

come vedi dai log c'è un errore nel file xorg.conf, guarda bene, e soprattutto aggiungi una riga vuota alla fine (molti editor non mettono il fine riga nella giusta maniera)

Ho aggiunto la riga in fondo a xorg.conf, è partito kde ma la risoluzione è sempre 640x480

ma posta nuovamente i log, se però l'errore come dici è ovunque penso a qualche errore hardware, dovresti provare altro monitor, altra scheda, altro cavo. Naturalmente prima capire se con determinate impostazioni puoi forzare una risoluzione, ma devi guardare la documentazione nvidia

Ho cambiato solo il monitor con risoluzione ottimale di 1680x1050 e viene correttamente configurato $\:D/$
