aggiungere una stampante su debian 4.0

lo so che l'argomento è stupido, ma non ci riesco!

utilizzo l'indirizzo localhost:631 per configurare le stampanti come con slack, se non chè, quando arrivo al momento di identificarmi per rendere definitiva la configurazione, il sistema non mi accetta l'utente root con la sua password (sono sicuro di non sbagliarla) e non riesco ad installare nessuna stampante. credo sia un problema di permessi ma sulla guida debian installata insieme al sistema base (la debian reference) non ho trovato nulla... potete indicarmi qualche link su cui leggere di più? o indicarmi sulla documentazione allegata qualcosa che mi è sfuggito?

scusa se te chiedo ma sei sicuro della password? Perchè non c'è alcuna configurazione da cambiare o permessi strani, in una installazione base -tipo vai di apt-get per gnome o kde >cups viene installato e non ci sono altre questioni-. Do per scontato che nell'interfaccia web di cups tu trovi la stampante...non penso nemmeno tu abbia editato il file di config. di cups mettendo la password cifrata...altra cosa scontata è che l'interfaccia di loopback sia regolarmente settata.

In fase di installazione hai espressamente rispondo affermativamente alla domanda se volevi che l'utente root potesse fare il login? Con debian, almeno nella versione Netinst, che è quella che ho fatto io ogni tanto, ti viene posta questa domanda. Se rispondi no allora ti ritrovi un sistema configurato, sotto questo aspetto, un po' come ubuntu, dove in pratica l'utente root è disabilitato e, quindi, per ottenere i privilegi di super user si usa il comando sudo. Magari lanciando il browser con i privilegi di root (es. sudo firefox) potresti risolvere il problema, e quando ti chiede i dati di login utilizzi quelli dell'utente.
Non ho mai usato cups non avendo una stampante, per cui prendi molto con le pinze quello che ho scritto.

Ciao ... prova a dare un occhiata al file /etc/cups/cupsd.conf ... almeno su Slackware é lì... comunque ho una debian 4.0 installata da qualche parte ... al limite controllo ...

grazie delle risposte:

1- sì sono strasicuro della password. quando non funzionava ho provato a usare il comando su da konsole (uso kde) e la password me l'ha presa senza problemi.
2- oddio all'interfaccia di loopback non ho pensato. in linea di massima penserei di sì e comunque se non fosse funzionante in teoria non dovrei neppure trovare la pagina iniziale di cups all'indirizzo localhost. o sbaglio?
3- anche io ho usato netinstall e l'utente root era disabilitato. però riconfigurando gdm ho abilitato il login locale di root. tanto è vero che quando non riuscivo a installare la stampante usando un login utente (e inserendo però l'utente root all'autenticazione in cups), mi sono riloggato direttamente nel sistema come root!

la cosa strana è che anche se avvio una sessione di kde come root, quando porto a fine la configurazione della stampante, prima di installarla cups mi chiede l'autenticazione!

4- ho dato un occhio al file di config di cups e non ci ho capito una mazza di primo acchito, quindi , dato che mi pareva strano che ci fossero settaggi "particolari" in debian, prima di mettermi a leggere tutte le regole di configurazione mi chiedevo se non stato sbagliando qualcosa di banale...

non ho idee al momento...

Anche nella installazione tradizionale viene chiesto cosa fare con il login di root...prova con un altro browser, o reinstalla da zero firefox (rimuovendolo completamente prima) e riprova.

intanto grazie per le risposte... chiedo scusa ma il pc con debian è un fisso della sede di firenze e in questi giorni non ci bazzico molto...

tanto per fare subito una prova veloce ho sostituito il file cupsd.conf con quello di clodo (il mio file era leggermente diverso e ve lo riporto in coda).
il file /etc/networks era ok! uguale al tuo clodo

ho riavviato cups ma nisba,
ho riavviato tutta debian ma nisba

ho provato sia con firefox che con konqueror ma nisba...

no capisco cosa fare... tutte le volte arivo in fondo alla procedura e quando mi chiede di autenticarmi inserisco nome utente (root) e password e cups mi risponde "autenticazione non riuscita": questo è il registro degli errori di cups:
