ciao...
 anch´io ho un nvidia Geforce 5200Fx...e con linux è un bordello...
 
 intanto l´installazione standard non funzia...
 non trova l´immagine del kernel...
 prova a costruire il modulo per il mio kernel...
 poi si blocca tutto...
 
 Sono allora passato alla famosa installazione manuale...(quella sconsigliata...per capirci,,,)
 
 morale...
 
 ad ogni boot mi dice che i moduli nvidia sono caricati con WARNING...ecco il LOG

 Si praticamente di dice che quel modulo è stato riconosciuto come un modulo estraneo non in licenza GPL... nulla di grave...
 Controlla invece come ti va con l´accelerazione 3d e cosa succede quando torni alla console dopo aver killato X... dovresti come tutti noi poveri sfortunati avere una brutta sorpresa...

di che problema parli? Io uso un 2.6.10-ck5 con i driver 6629 e va tutto bene, con geforce 440mx , su un pc fisso.
 So di un mio amico con un portatile che però quando appunto esce da X si ritrova con la console corrotta e inservibile..
 anche a voi succede? sarebbe interessante tracciarre meglio il problema che può essere un insieme di fattori sfavorevoli..

Il problema della consolle inservibile dipende dal chipset della MB.. nel file readme dei driver a un certo punto c´è una lista di chipset supportati direttamente da NVIDIA anzichè AGPGART.. per la mia esperienza tutti quei chipset supportati direttamente da NVIDIA causano il fastidioso problema della consolle, che se non erro può essere risolto disabilitando il framebuffer dentro lilo.conf ed eliminando il supporto per rivafb..
 
 Per controllare il corretto funzionamento dei driver:
 
 less /proc/driver/nvidia/agp/status
 
 Compilare i driver manualmente (la forma sconsigliata) è molto meglio, e la consiglio vivamente, specialmente dopo opportune modifiche al file DRIVERSCOMPATTATI/usr/src/nv/os-registry.c

Se non vi piace l´istallazione manuale almeno passate l´opzione "--force-tls=new" all´istaller così vi ricompila i tls anzichè usare quelli impacchettati con il kernel di chissà quale era :-]

 ho appena scaricato e compilato il kernel 2.6.11 e anche io ho qualche problemino con i drivers nvidia. L´installazione si schianta quando l´installer tenta di compilare il driver e dal log ho estratto questo:

Ciao a tutti...
 vedo che il problema è sentito...
 
 chiediamo un pò alla volta...
 
 Mangus...i comandi glxgear e glxinfo non funzionano...anzi...meglio ancora...non esistono...
 potrebbe essere che avendo installato i driver con il
 make install
 (l´istallazione standard non funzionava)
 abbia fatto casini?...se si...come posso rimediare?...
 
 Per quanto concerne la Console inservibile...uno schermo che sembra una scacchiera...io ho fatto così...
 
 ho disabilitato AGPGART...
 modificanfo in /etc/rc.d/rc.modules o rc.M
 modprobe agpgart agp_try_unsupported=1
 
 ora facendo lsmod AGP risulta caricato...
 e andando in /proc/driver/nvidia/agp# cat status
 Status: Enabled
 Driver: AGPGART
 AGP Rate: 8x
 Fast Writes: Disabled
 SBA: Enabled
 
 E niente scherzo dei quadri...

Ciao a tutti, ho compilato il kernel 2.6.11, però all´installazione dei driver nvidia(6629) (ho una geforce 4 MMX MB 128) riscontro un grosso problema nonostante l´installazione vada a buon fine riscontro (come anche su versioni del kernel precedenti 2.6.10) problemi nel ridisegnamento di X... Cerco di spiegarmi meglio... X parte ma rimane in sottoimpressione il di Nvidia a cui gli si sovrappone lo splash di kde e si ridisegna tutto lì sopra crando un gran casino!mentre con i driver nv va tranquillamente!Non c´è la faccio più devo risolvere questo problema!!!aiutatemi gentilmente se potete!!!

 non ho capito bene cosa ti succede...
 ma se il problema è il logo nvidia...
 toglilo...
 aggiungi a xorg.conf
 nella sezione DEVICE...dove si richiama il driver nvidia...
 Option "NoLogo" "true"
 comunque non capisco perchè ti faccia questo scherzo...

 confermo, per quello che mi riguarda, che l´applicazione della patch cumulativa risolve tutti i problemi. I drivers si compilano correttamente e funzionano correttamente. Tra l´altro l´interessante post dice anche che la/e patch/es presenti sul sito verranno incluse nella prossima release dei drivers Nvidia. Have a nice day
