Carissimi,

Spero di risolvere il seguente problema su cui da mesi sto lavorando:

ho installato Linux Slackware 11 (kernel 2.4) su una partizione e Linux Slackware 12 (kernel 2.6) su un'altra partizione. Su entrambe ho installato ndiswrapper e wpa_supplicant, stessa configurazione (che dopo si legge in dettaglio), e stesso script di avviamento. La scheda è una WG111v2 con i drivers di WIN98.

Problema: si connette con Slackware 11 (da cui sto scrivendo) ma non con Slackware 12.

Dopo queste linee entra in loop su Slackware 12, mentre su Slackware 11 è già connesso ed uso quindi direttamente dhcpd.

Come potete vedere iwlist trova l'AP, ma al momento di connettersi... si disconnette ed entra in loop (e connette e poi si disconnette...).

Qualcuno può aiutarmi?

Hai provato a connetterti senza chiave prima, giusto per vedere se funziona senza errori, magari c'è qualche errore di configurazione nella rete, e poi rifai la procedura per il wpa.

Ho provato a fare come dici tu.

Ho formattato e rifatto una installazione Slack12.
Prima di incominciare a giocare con la wifi ho collegato il pc al modem-router con un cavo cross-link normale.
Come puoi intuire dal fatto che ti sto rispondendo, tutto è filato liscio e navigo tranquillamente.

Ora riprovo a giocare con la chiave usb.

Passi che intraprenderò:

1) non toccherò il kernel (quindi rimarrà quello della installazione standard)
2) scarico ultimi sorgenti ndiswrapper, compilo ed installo
3) installo i drvier windows della chiave usb con ndiswrapper
4) wpa è già installato, devo solo configurarlo per la mia rete
5) non toccherò nessun altro file di configurazione
6) riprovo a collegarmi
7) ti faccio sapere come va a finire.

come puoi vedere dalla sezione evidenziata con 1111111111 la scheda funziona,
infatti ha potuto fare una scansione delle reti wifi presenti ed ha riconosciuto la mia,
ma non riesce ad associare (sezione 22222222222)...

non ho idea di quale sia il problema.

Alla configurazione base di wpa_supplicant.conf ho solo identificato la mia ssid ed ho inserito la mia pass generata da wpa_passphrase.

Sto litigando anche io con lo stesso dongle. Un tempo riuscivo a farlo funzionare con ndiswrapper, ora non più e non me ne dò spiegazione. Spulciando in rete ho visto che le ultime release del kernel 2.6 includono il modulo per il chip rtl8187, che dovrebbe essere quello utilizzato dal dongle in questione. Ci sono infatti due versioni di wg111v2, una monta il chip prism54, l'altra l'rtl8187. La differenza pare essere riconoscibile dall'id; di fatto il "nostro" id (0846:6a00) identifica la seconda famiglia di chip. Provando a far funzionare nativamente il dongle, riesco a "tirar su" l'interfaccia, mi ritrovo con la mia bella wlan0, cui posso assegnare l'ip e quindi fare il routing. Tuttavia, non riesco in nessun modo ad associarmi all'ap, nemmeno disabilitando il crypt di qualsiasi genere (wep o wpa che sia). La cosa è molto strana perchè con iwlist riesco a vedere la rete senza problemi. E' proprio un problema di associazione all'ap.
Nel mentre, hai risolto con ndis?
Comunque sia, mi piacerebbe veder funzionare il device nativamente, come Dio comanda.

Non so il kernel standard della Slackware se ha l'impostazione attivata, l'huge della Slackware ce l'ha come modulo.
Ma il driver della realtek 8187 dovrebbe proprio essere per quel dongle

Anche io ho il WG111v2 e sono riuscito a farlo andare sia con ndiswrapper sia con il driver nativo, che con gli ultimi kernel è diventato abbastanza stabile.

Attenzione, Slackware current non 12...
Con ndiswrapper comunque bisogna usare i driver per 98 altrimenti non funziona. Ma senza cifrare la rete riesci a connetterti?
Il mio consiglio è di usare il driver nativo...

Non "prendo" l'ip: non uso il dhcp, imposto l'ip in modo statico.
Io non ho fatto altro che compilare il modulo rtl8187 nel kernel. Ora, collegando il dongle, il kernel lo rileva e gli assegna il device fittizio wlan0, che immagino sia un alias visto che listando i NIC c'è anche l'omologo wmaster0-00. Comunque, come dicevo, vedo la cella cui connettermi (con iwlist, che dà anche la qualità del segnale). Attivo l'interfaccia assegnando con iwconfig l'essid, il mode Managed ed il canale, dopodichè assegno ip e subnet mask con ifconfig e faccio il routing al gateway. Cose che funzionano perfettamente con la lan, e che anche in questo caso sembrano fare il loro dovere. Tuttavia, dando un iwconfig wlan0, l'ap risulta sempre e comunque non associato ed è di fatto impossibile ogni tipo di collegamento (il comando dà anche qualità del segnale nulla).

P.S. Io uso un kernel 2.6.22.5: tu che kernel usi? Non vorrei che nelle ultime release il driver rtl fosse migliorato al punto da funzionare. Purtroppo la macchina è vecchiotta e tendo ad evitare le compilazioni (ci vuole un paio di ore per un kernel).

Io però uso DHCP, non so se c'entra qualcosa...

Mah, non vedo che cosa possa mancare: il modulo viene inserito correttamente. C'è una cosa strana, a dire il vero; quando faccio un lsmod, il modulo rtl8187 risulta inutilizzato, mentre l'usbcore, tra i moduli che associa, elenca anche l'rtl8187. Non so se nel tuo lsmod la situazione sia analoga. Inoltre, io attacco il dongle ad un bus usb1.1 (la macchina è quella che è) e uso ohci e l'uhci, rimuovendo il modulo ehci che so non essere compatibile col mio controller usb.

Dunque, ho risolto il problema grazie al consiglio di anycolouryoulike.
In pratica, ho compilato il supporto per ieee802.11 come modulare, quindi lui di default non lo carica. In pratica, ho inserito quel modulo, ho rifatto tutta la pappardella di comandi ifconfig e iwconfig ed ora l'interfaccia si associa all'ap e comunica. La connessione è di fatto funzionante. La cosa che mi preme fare è impostare una connessione protetta.

@anycolouryoulike: tu usi wpa? Il wep so che è piuttosto scadente, anche se a dire il vero potrei attivare il controllo del mac address sul router, il quale taglia la testa al toro...

in questi giorni stavo proprio cercando un dongle compatibile. un negoziante mi ha giusto proposto questo dongle assicurandomi la sua compatibilità con linux, ma avevo letto nel forum che tu stesso ne lamentavi problemi di funzionamento.

cosa mi dite in proposito? vi funziona il wpa?

ho bisogno di un dongle usb compatibile nativamente con il kernel linux e che supporti la crittografia wpa e che funzion (come ha detto qualcuno qui) come Dio comanda

. ce ne sono altri migliori che potete consigliarmi?

Io posseggo quel dongle perchè me l'hanno dato in bundle con il router netgear. Ora che sono riuscito a farlo funzionare, farò dei test anche per la connessione criptata. Ad oggi ho provato il wep, che è funzionante. Ho un altro dongle, un asus wl-167g, che con i driver serial monkey funziona molto bene (wep o wpa-psk). Prima di procedere all'acquisto, comunque, ti consiglio di sincerarti di quale chip sia montato: spesso vengono cambiati dal produttore e non sempre viene cambiata la denominazione del prodotto e questo può davvero portare a brutte sorprese.
