Non riesco a settare udma2 nel masterizzatore

Ciao a tutti.

Ho un problema abbastanza rognoso con il masterizzatore: s'impalla tragicamente ogni qual volta gli si cerca di far masterizzare una iso dvd. E quando dico "s'impalla" intendo che la cpu schizza al 100% e non ne vuole sapere di scendere, per riuscire a killare X e digitare "halt" bisogna pazientare almeno 15 minuti e se non si spegne il computer il masterizzatore non si riapre piu' e non viene piu' riconosciuto ad un successivo riavvio.

Ad ogni modo ne avevo gia' parlato qui: viewtopic.php?f=2&t=20687&start=0
ed avevo risolto cosi:

- ho dato hdparm -i /dev/cdwriter ed ho visto che avevo udma4.
- ho settato udma a 2 con hdparm -X udma2 /dev/cdwriter
- ho controllato anche di avere il dma attivo con hdparm -d /dev/cdwriter

....avevo anche inserito hdparm -X udma2 /dev/cdwriter in rc.local cosi' che venisse eseguito ad ogni avvio, altrimenti me lo ritrovavo in udma2.

Il problema e' che ora dando hdparm -X udma2 /dev/cdwriter ricevo questo errore:

e udma rimane a 4.

Inoltre, anche se non credo che questo sia un problema dato che ho i pacchetti base di slack 12.2, quando avvio la scrittura della iso del dvd ricevo questo messaggio da /var/log/messages:

Avete idea di come io possa evitare l'errore?
Ho anche provato a googlare la stringa dell'errore stesso ma non ho trovato praticamente nessun risultato.....e nn so dove sbattere la testa perche' fino alla slack 12.1 questa soluzione funzionava alla grande.

Su freshmeat, al progetto hdparm, ho trovato questo:

$ sudo /sbin/hdparm -c1 -d1 /dev/sda

libata does not have a way to control DMA or 32bit PIO settings. So the command will fail. Normal. Ignore it.
Libata will always use DMA if possible, so no need for either setting.

No bhe, i device sono sempre allo stesso posto, tant'e' che /mnt/cdwriter funziona alla perfezione come mount point.

Eh bhe, "no need for either setting" lo dicono loro...io con udma settato a 4 non riesco a masterizzare ste benedette iso dvd e non ne capisco il motivo e l'unica soluzione era abbassarlo a 2.
Quindi ce l'ho eccome il bisogno di "either settings".

Mi chiedo, se andava in slackware 12.1 perche' non deve piu' andare in slackware 12.2? Quali pacchetti possono essersi messi in mezzo?

Io credo che ti convenga provare a scollegare il cdrom collegato in parallelo per vedere se per sbaglio non sia quello a causare i problemi.
Se anche così non va, prova a mettere il masterizzatore come master e metterlo in fondo al cavo piatto da 80pin... se così funziona tutto il problema é proprio l' altro dispositivo IDE.

Se non é per quel motivo prova a postare un dmesg ed un lsmod forse il kernel carica un driver ATA generico legacy e allora c' é fare i salti mortali per farlo funzionare ... aspetta che cerco un post ....

Dunque, non avevo mai pensato che potesse essere un problema hardware quindi ho seguito i tuoi consigli ed ho fatto qualche test, anche se non ho risolto nulla.

Dunque, come prima cosa ho messo il masterizzatore come master ed il lettore come slave, mentre prima era il contrario; non e' servito a nulla.
Allora ho lasciato il masterizzatore come master ed ho del tutto staccato il lettore dvd; inutile anche questo. Ho provato a masterizzare un'iso dvd e si e' addirittura piantata allo 0% invece che verso la fine come sempre. Udma e' sempre a 4 e cercando di settarlo a 2 da sempre il solito errore.

Mi pare che all'avvio del pc, nella fase di post, dia un warning relativo ad un cavo da 80 pin....che possa centrare qualcosa? Cerco di segnarmelo rapidamente e ve lo scrivo?

Se hai il cavo a 40 fili, e non a 80, il massimo supportato e' UDMA2 (o 3, non ricordo).
Prova un cavo da 80 fili, magari basta quello. Lo trovi in qualunque negozio. Il connettore e' uguale, sempre da 40 pin, i 40 fili in piu' sono tutte masse.

Dunque, l'errore che vien fuori, sia attaccando solo 1 lettore che attaccandoli entrambi e' questo:

Che sia perche' il canale primary e' scollegato, dato che l'hard disk eide non lo uso piu' ed i lettori sono sul secondary?
Poi comunque ho controllato ed il cavo che sto utilizzando e' quello della motherboard, griffato Asus, con scritto sopra addirittura "CdRom Cable"...non credo che il problema stia li.

Pero' io continuo a non riuscire a masterizzare i dvd: ho fatto un'altra prova, masterizzando un miscuglio di files (non un'iso stavolta) ed il pc si blocca quando il processo di scrittura e' ancora allo 0%.
Da messages leggo le solite cose:

E' veramente uno strano problema..strano e fastidioso...sono stufo di portarmelo dietro....

Che dite, provo a masterizzare da una live per vedere se il problema e' Slackware?
Senno' altre prove che potrei fare?

Sei proprio sicuro che il cavo sia a 80 fili, e non a 40? Il fatto che ci sia scritto "CDRom Cable" mi fa sorgere questo dubbio.
Dopotutto il messaggio di errore parla chiaro.
Poi, collegalo sul primario, dato che e' libero, e assicurati che sia settato come Master (e non come cable select, o addirittura slave).
Se e' a 40 fili e' normale che non ti permetta di andare oltre il DMA2.
Contali e facci sapere. Conta i fili, non i pin del connettore: quelli sono sempre 40

EDIT: risolto facendo la cosa più stupida: downgrade di hdparm alla versione 8.6 (pacchetto della 12.1)
Avevo provato anche con l'upgrade compilando l'ultima versione disponibile, ma mi dava lo stesso errore.

Offtopic: Ma poi, sbaglio o tutti i cavi a 80 poli sono abbastanza corti? Ho un case formato tower, i masterizzatori (ho anche quello vecchio per CD) sono in alto, non so neanche se ci arriverei con un cavo di quel genere.
Ce l'ho così da quattro anni, funziona e questo mi basta.
