La situazione è proprio bizzarra . Quindi il server X lo lanci con startx o con cosa? Inoltre, fai un login dal secondo terminale (ctrl+alt+F2) e poi prova di nuovo a dare:

in questo caso il PATH è corretto vero?

non e' obbligatoria la sua presenza... il default e' in /etc/X11/xinit se non erro...

detto cio', una mia curiosita':
percaso ridefinisci PATH in $HOME/.bash_profile e/o .profile e/o .bash_login e/o .bashrc ?
sembra di capire che le direttive predefinite vengano sovrascritte...

controlla i vari file che interessano il login utente.
